Footnotes
From the President's Desk
The Board of Directors for The Nova Scotia Association of Reflexology Practitioners was
selected at the 1st AGM in Halifax in September 2005. I have the honour and privilege of holding
the office of President. My personal goal is to educate the public as to the benefits of Reflexology
and to integrate Reflexology therapy into the health care system. I encourage all members to set-
up displays and give talks and demonstrations at local events such as home shows and health
days to promote Reflexology.
Our first meeting had us hard at work with many opportunities ahead of us. One of the most
important was the proposed Massage Legislating Bill which would have resulted in the potential
closure of practices of qualified Reflexology providers as we are currently listed within their scope
of practice. NSARP is now working to change this. I'm glad to report this bill has not passed or
been read into law. Thank you to the RAC for their efforts in helping us to defeat this detrimental
attempt at legislation.
We are working with The Department of Health Minister, Chris D'Entremont, and The Department
of Health Promotion and Protection Minister, Barry Barnet, to educate them about the many bene-
fits of Reflexology. Our goal is to be officially recognized as a health care profession which in turn
will lead to increased opportunities for our members. In a recent letter to NSARP, Premier MacDon-
ald again states how important the issue of health care is to the Government.
We are preparing for NSARP's 2nd Conference and AGM which will be held this year in Kentville
on Saturday, September 30th. This will be a busy 1-day affair packed with information from a va-
riety of guest speakers - an excellent opportunity for professional growth and development. It will
also be a chance to socialize and exchange ideas with fellow Reflexologists. Members, non-mem-
bers and students alike are invited to attend. A light lunch will be included in the Conference fee.
Our web site will have more information on this event as it becomes available. You may also call
the Office for further details.
NSARP has also been planning strategies and networking with health insurance providers with the
intent of encouraging them to add Reflexology therapy as a benefit under a group health plan and
to have registered Reflexologists included as service providers. Clients would then be able to claim
reimbursement for our services. The BOD will be developing further a plan of action. This is a
project that NSARP and RAC are pursuing together with a petition campaign. Perhaps a nation-
wide effort will serve to accomplish this important goal. You should now have received your infor-
mation pack in the mail.
Hopefully, some of our members will be able to attend RAC's Conference being held in September
in beautiful BC. Let's continue to work together to make Reflexology a valued and routine
component of our health care system.
Cheers, Angel Nicholson RCR
