Dear Happy Toes,
Q
. I have a new client who, amongst other health concerns, is experiencing leakage of her blad-
der when she sneezes or coughs. Can Reflexology help with this?
A
. Absolutely! This condition is termed stress incontinence and is especially common in women
who have had several children. The muscles that control the flow of urine from the bladder to the
outside of the body weaken making bladder control more difficult. I have found that a client will
usually experience relief following 2-3 sessions. I space these 2 weeks apart to allow the body
time to respond to therapy. The problem will often resolve itself after 4 treatments. She may
likely need a maintenance session every now and then to maintain muscle control. Make sure to
work the area corresponding to the base of the bladder thoroughly several times during therapy.
If surgery has been performed in an attempt to correct this problem, then scar tissue will be
present which will take some time to break down. Having her return on a monthly basis for a
while will be beneficial. It could take 6 months or longer to maximize results.
Good luck. Happy Toes
Detoxification & Spring Cleaning
Dr. Jyl Bishop Veale, Bsc, ND
Fair weather is coming!
Although at times it seems winter will never end, March truly does come
in like a lion and go out like a lamb. For many, this season of new growth
is synonymous with cleansing. "Spring cleaning" usually involves a thor-
ough top to bottom cleaning of the entire house, in addition to sorting
through various items and possessions that have become stockpiled over
the course of the year. Our bodies are magnificent, self-regulating entities
that work 24 hours a day, even while we are sleeping. It follows, then,
that our body also requires an internal cleaning of sorts, and there is no
better time than the new season at hand.
